History of Lumberton
The History of Lumberton ISD
In 1957, the Loeb Common School District and Chance Common School District consolidated to form Chance-Loeb School District, to serve area students in the first through eighth grades. High school students attended either Silsbee or Kountze High School with tuition. The Chance-Loeb School District became Lumberton ISD in 1967.
Lumberton Early Childhood School (PreK, K, 1ST, PPCD)
Lumberton Early Childhood School was built in 1960, and served as the only school facility until 1967, when a new high school was built. In 1973 the facility became known as the Intermediate School with grades 4 through 6. Later, grades Kindergarten, 4, and 5 were housed in the facility, until 1994, when it became the Early Childhood School and served Pre-K, Kindergarten, and first grade students. A cafeteria and office area was added to the campus in 1995 and a new classroom complex was built in 2003. In 2023, construction was completed to showcase a new PE gym, library/media center, courtyard and several new classrooms, as well as a new playground!
Lumberton Primary School (1st & 2nd)
Lumberton Primary School was built in 1973, for grades K, 1, 2 & 3. Kindergarten was eventually moved because enrollment exceeded the building capacity. In 2000, a new 80,000 square foot Lumberton Primary School was built and housed grades 2 and 3. The 1973 building was extensively remodeled and first grade had a new home beginning in 2001. Lumberton Primary School was home to 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders at LISD until 2023, when third grade moved to Lumberton Intermediate School. Since 2023, Lumberton Primary School is the home of our district's 1st and 2nd grades.
Lumberton Intermediate School (3rd, 4th & 5th)
Lumberton Intermediate School was completed in 1994 for students in grades 4, 5 & 6 on South LHS Drive, next to Lumberton High School. It relieved overcrowding at three campuses by taking one grade level from each. A gym was added in 1997, and in 2002, fourteen additional classrooms were added to the campus. In 2012 the cafeteria was renovated. Lumberton Intermediate School was the home of the district's 4th, 5th and 6th grades until 2023 when our bond renovation included a new campus for LIS connected to the former Lumberton Middle School building on South Main Street. In 2023, Lumberton Intermediate School was relocated to the new campus, just behind the LISD Administration Office and faces East Candlestick Drive. LIS currently houses 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.
Lumberton Middle School (6th, 7th & 8th)
Lumberton Middle School was built in 1967 and served as the high school until 1979, when the present high school was built. The Middle School provided instruction for students in grades 7-8 at that location until 2023. The Choir Room was added in 1990 and the facility received extensive remodeling in 2002. Fourteen new classrooms and the Band Hall/Gym facilities were added in 2003.In 2012 electrical changes were made. In 2023 with bond renovations, Lumberton Middle School relocated across town to the previous Lumberton Intermediate School campus, and fifteen new science labs/classrooms were added, as well as an expansion of the Library/Media center, new offices, a new band hall and choir facilities and renovated gym/locker rooms. With that move, LMS absorbed 6th grade and since 2023, LMS has been the home for the district's 6th, 7th and 8th grades.
Lumberton High School (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th)
Lumberton High School was built in 1979 for students in grades 9-12. The original facility consisted of the main building with classrooms, vocational building, field house, and athletic fields. During the last ten years, several construction projects have added additional facilities to the high school complex; C-Hall in 1995, Girls’ Field House in 1997, Stadium expansion in 1998, and the Band, Choir, D-Wing, and Food Court areas were completed in 1999. The Science Lab addition to D-wing was completed in 2002. In 2012 electrical changes were made, new science lab added, renovated field house/weight room/trainers area and stadium. With the new bond, LHS expanded with a new state-of-the-art CTE wing, including culinary labs, A/V labs and other CTE courses like pet grooming, etc. The V-Hall was renovated, along with the Library/Media center and the carpet and lockers were removed from all hallways.
Raider Stadium has endured several upgrades, including a new home side of bleachers in 1999, new "guest" bleachers and restroom facility that became the new "home" side in the mid 2000s and a new track and turf. Gymnasiums, baseball, and softball facilities have been upgraded and renovated over the years. In 2012, the district built a multi-purpose facility with three full-size courts for auxiliary practices for athletic teams and our cheerleaders.
Administration Building
The original Administration Building was located on the Early Childhood campus and was a portable building. Our current location at 121 South Main was built in 1978 and a new addition to the location was built in 1996.
